Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States. This happened on December 7, 1787. The date is written on the Flag of Delaware (see USA - State Flags Quiz) and the nickname of Delaware is The First State (see USA - State Nicknames Quiz).
With the ratification of New Hampshire as the ninth state, the Constitution came into effect (requirement of Article Seven). Under the same article, Rhode Island was the last state to ratify the Constitution. Following states where admitted to the Union.
